The board being too long for my Pyrex dish and the overlap in the middle notwithstanding, this dull, mottled finish is typical of what I get every time I use TInnit other than the day I mix it.

The precipitate never re-dissolves; and I’m guessing that the salts sitting directly on the board are what cause the mottling.


I find this curious, as I mixed this batch only two weeks ago, when it worked noticeably better than this … although now that I mention it, I think even then it produced duller results than it has in the past. Perhaps I exceeded the shelf life of the unopened package, so perhaps I’m being unduly hard on the Tinnit; but I’ve had the same problem before.

I’ve been having good luck lately with scouring pads to shine up the boards; but tonight I had to resort to wet-sanding. Turned out fairly well.


No, that’s not how I typically lay out circuit boards.

DOCman 1.5.10 and 1.4.2 released


We are happy to announce the immediate availability of DOCman 1.5.10 and DOCman 1.4.2!


During the recent holidays, a medium level vulnerability was discovered in DOCman. We found a query that wasn’t being properly escaped and could lead to an SQL Injection. There is no known exploit for this vulnerability and it would be very difficult to create one because there are other security measures in place.


At Joomlatools we are fanatic about security and even if DOCman 1.5.9 has recently been released, we recommend upgrading to 1.5.10 just to be on the safe side.


This vulnerability affects all versions of DOCman prior to 1.5.10. So if you’re using 1.5.9 or older, please upgrade to 1.5.10. If you’re using 1.4.1 or older, please upgrade to 1.4.2.

We recently had an issue with our email notifications which are being run through Fetchapp. Some of our customers have received numerous emails notifying them about the 1.5.10 upgrade. We sincerely apologize for that!

A rather geeky first post for the New Year, but that’s no bad thing.


So the launch of an interesting if niche extension to the Google Maps javascript api, you can read Thor’s blog post here, but as of today you can now use a new library of functions as an addition to the javascript api to carry out spherical geometry calculations.


The world is no longer flat !


This has for a long time been a blind-spot, as with many api’s a flat euclidean coordinate system was used, which is OK for most applications covering relatively small areas or not requiring coordinate geometry calculations. Now with the new library extending the v3 API it is possible to use functions based on spherical geometry (assuming a sphere of radius 6378137m) giving more accurate area, distance, heading and general coordinate geometry functions.


For most users of Google Maps and the API this will not be relevant however, for the geo-geeks this is hardcore..



When represented on a projected map, the difference between the “flat” rhumb (red) and the spheric geometry based great circle lines (purple) are clear, but also misleading as the actual difference is less than a thousand kilometres between London and San Francisco and the rhumb line is actually longer !


So next time you take out the G-V you can at last accurately estimate fuel load (only joking !!)


It’s also of note that this new functionality is being delivered as an extension library which needs to be loaded in addition to the core v3 api, thereby making sure the core v3 api remains as small as possible for potential mobile use.

Google Research awards winter deadline 1st February


Every year Google accepts research proposals for small grants awarded to researchers at academic institutions working on projects which in general terms improve access to information.


Google funds Research Awards with very few restrictions and retains no intellectual property from the research itself, indeed there is an expectation that results from the research are open sourced and widely published.


Geospatial technology is one of the areas of research which receives funding and I am Google sponsor for a couple of funded projects,so if you are a researcher working in a University or Research Institution and are interested in applying for a grant, you have couple weeks to do so.

The Pros and Cons of Twitter Newspapers


Are Twitter newspapers effective for freelancers?


For the past few months, I’ve been seeing links to online “newspapers” pop up in the Twitter stream. In fact, we first discussed Twitter Newspapers on Freelance Folder in an Open Thread a few months ago. Since online social media newspapers seem to be becoming more popular, I decided to take a closer look at this trend.


In this post, I’ll explain what a social media newspaper is and examine the pros and cons of having a Twitter newspaper. I’ll also share the results of an informal Twitter poll that I conducted.


What Is a Twitter Newspaper?


If you’re not familiar with social media newspapers, it’s important to understand what they are. Simply put, a social media newspaper automatically summarizes the content of user-selected tweets (and Facebook content) based on user-defined criteria (such as a Twitter list or hash tag). Typically, the newspaper is then tweeted out into the user’s Twitter stream. In some cases, it may also be shared on the user’s website.


Technically, tools that create such newspapers are aggregators–meaning that they gather a specified type of information from designated sources. In this case, however, the aggregator has been specifically designed to work with social media. Those who aggregate content are often referred to as “curators.”


Creating a Social Media Newspaper


Here are several online tools that you can use to create a Twitter or Facebook newspaper:



  • Paper.li–This newspaper tool seems allows you to create custom newspapers from both Twitter and Facebook.

  • Twitter Tim.es–This newspaper tool allows you to extract information from either media sources and from Twitter lists.

  • PostPost–This newspaper tool is currently limited to Facebook only.


However, expect new tools to crop up in the coming months. I would also expect to see existing tools expand to include other social media platforms.


Social Media Newspaper Pros and Cons


There are some advantages and disadvantages to having a Twitter newspaper.


I’ll tackle the advantages first:



  1. An organizational tool–Most Twitter users have more than one interest, so their Twitter streams can be chaotic, to say the least. A Twitter newspaper can help a freelancer gather related material.

  2. A way to find new information/contacts–Different social media users have access to different tweets and contacts. Reading someone else’s Twitter newspaper on a topic that you are interested in can help you find new information or contacts.

  3. Another “touch”–If you do a good job of creating your social media newspaper and it adds value for those you share it with, it could be a positive addition to your online freelancing brand.

  4. Possible SEO benefits–Because some social media newspapers are archived there may be some SEO benefits for either the creator of the newspaper or for those whose information is included.

  5. No cost (and easy to set up)–Most social media newspapers are free for the user and they are relatively simple to set up. Once one is set up, the newspaper creation process is automatic.


Now, for the disadvantages:



  1. Can’t be monetized–As far as I can tell, there is no way for a social media user to place advertisements on his or her social media newspaper.

  2. Only as good as your criteria–The contents of your social media newspaper will only be as good as your criteria (and your followers). If your criteria is poorly chosen or you do not follow interesting Tweeters, your newsletter may not add value.

  3. Some find it annoying–The annoyance factor should not be totally discounted. In my informal poll (see below) a significant number of freelancers indicated that they were annoyed with those who promote their Twitter newspapers.

  4. May be ignored by others–If your social media newspaper doesn’t deliver value, you may find that others ignore it entirely–making the value of having it as part of your brand questionable.


What Freelancers Think About Twitter Newspapers


I reached out on Twitter to discover how some freelancers felt about Twitter newspapers. I also asked a few of my contacts who already have social media newspapers already to comment on the experience.


Although my little Twitter poll was very informal and not necessarily scientific, I was surprised to discover that many freelancers don’t know what a Twitter newspaper is. There was also a significant number of comments that described Twitter newspapers as being “annoying.” Surprisingly, I didn’t get any positive comments.


I then decided to go ahead and ask a few freelancers who are using Twitter newspapers what they thought about the experience. These comments were positive. Here are two different opinions:



  • Shakirah Dawud (@shakirah_dawud), who blogs at Deliberate Ink, shared her experience: ” I think the best thing about it is how it helps bind me by association to some of my most respected and informative tweeps on my topic.”

  • George Passwater (@GRPasswater) provided similar feedback: “The feedback I’ve received on my Twitter daily papers is always positive. Many tell me how the news in each paper has helped them in one way or another. For me, it’s a win-win situation. I get to connect with all kinds of great people who read the papers and they get great content they can use for their own use.”

There’s no doubt that freelancers need many skills that non-freelancers don’t think about. It’s not enough to simply be a good writer, a good designer, a good web developer (or whatever your specialty is). The need to have these other skills is one of the things that makes freelancing so difficult.


Many blog posts have been written about a freelancer’s need to market one’s self, the need to manage one’s financial affairs, and the need to manage your time well. But, a crucial freelancing skill, self-discipline is rarely mentioned.


In this post, I’ll explain why self-discipline is important to freelancers and provide some examples of instances when self-discipline should be used.


The Hidden Part of the Success Puzzle


In many ways, I think that self-discipline is the hidden part of the success puzzle. We freelancers don’t talk about it much and sometimes I think that we forget about it.


But, the truth is that learning self-discipline is every bit as important to being a successful freelancer as learning to code, design, or write well.


Another reason that we freelancers might not discuss self-discipline is because we’re not quite sure how it fits into the freelancing picture. We don’t know when to exercise self-discipline.


6 Ways to Exercise Freelancing Self-Discipline


If you’re in freelancing for the long haul, then you’ll need some self-discipline. Here are some crucial areas where self-discipline is needed:



  1. Save Money During the Good Times. As I write this post, I’ve just finished reading blog posts from several other freelancers describing their financial woes. The best way to mitigate the times when your income is lower than normal is to set aside part of your income during your better months.

  2. Work When No One Is Looking. One thing that freelancers do not have is a boss looking over their shoulder all of the time to check on them and make sure that they are doing their job. A freelancer has to learn to get the work done even if no one is holding him or her accountable.

  3. Market Yourself. Many freelancers have trouble promoting themselves. (I count myself as part of this group.) However unpleasant marketing may seem to you, if you want to keep your freelancing business afloat, you’ve got to keep on marketing yourself–whether you like it or not.

  4. Work on Nonpaying Tasks. Not every task that a freelancer does can be directly billed to a client. However, it’s still important to keep up with those parts of your business that don’t generate income, such as bookkeeping, collections, and marketing. Not doing so can cost you a lot of money.

  5. Keep Your Skills Up to Date. Many corporations require periodic re-training for their employees. As a freelancer, however, it’s up to you to make sure that your marketable skills are up to date. When you’re busy it’s easy to put training off (especially since it doesn’t pay the bills), but don’t do it.

  6. Control Your Temper. As a freelancer, you may have to deal directly with more people than you ever would have had to face as an employee. What this means is that sometimes you are going to run across clients and others who are less than pleasant. Keep your temper in check no matter what.


What to Do If Your Self-Discipline Fails


This is probably the most important tip of the day. I’ll be first person to say that I don’t follow all of the above advice all of the time perfectly. No one can. Everyone fails from time-to-time.


So what should you do when you’ve had a lapse in self-discipline? What about when you’ve spent your savings? Or, maybe you’ve slacked off on your marketing efforts? What’s a freelancer to do then?


Simple. First of all, don’t panic. Instead, reboot. If you’ve spent your savings, start again to save. If you’ve slacked off on marketing your business, start marketing it again.


Remember, a lapse in self-discipline doesn’t have to be a permanent setback.

I will not claim to be an expert on freelancing itself because I have never done it, but what I do know about is hiring freelancers to do work for me.


I have hired people to do many tasks for me that I can’t do, won’t do or simply don’t have time for. It is really helpful to get your business up and running faster than you ever could on your own by using freelancers.


I have found some things freelancers tend to cut corners on or simply do badly. From a client’s perspective, these things will not put you in good stead when you are looking to get follow up work.


Bad Freelancing Practices


Here are some things that freelancers do that really create a bad impression:



  • Ignoring the job description–The first and by far the most irritating is when a freelancer doesn’t read the description of the job before accepting it. Now I am aware that there are a lot of time constraints on people’s time and that you shouldn’t be expected to do everything, but this is one thing that is a must. When I ask someone to do work for me I always have very specific requests and I do this because the basic and broad things I know how to do myself and I hire freelancers to handle the specifics. That’s what I pay for. What I don’t expect is people sending me a report half way through the project and seeing that they haven’t done precisely what I’ve asked for because it was all in the description. If you don’t understand what the client wants, then ask the client before the start of the project.

  • Bad communication–Which brings me on to my next point, communication is key. It is vital for clients to know what is going on with the task that has been set. If regular reports aren’t received I get nervous that they aren’t doing what I have asked or are simply not doing anything. When a job is handed over to help a business it is natural for the client to want to know what is going on because it is their business. Always keep that in mind. Don’t be afraid as the freelancer to ask questions or just send a friendly message saying a target will be met by tomorrow. This gives the impression that you are on top of the situation and it will make the relationship run far more smoothly.

  • Asking for rating changes–This one is simply a personal pet peeve, but if it puts me off hiring freelancers again then I am sure it will put others off also. Do not ask the employer to change their rating of you. This is in relation to online freelance websites where you have to leave feedback on how the freelancer performed during the project. I have had a few people mail me after I have given my honest rating of how they performed and ask me to up their rating. That gets my blood boiling. The whole point of a rating system is so that people can get an honest opinion of how the project went not to see what the freelancer believes they should have got. I’m afraid that a good rating must be earned not asked for.

  • Not being courteous–The final thing I would like to mention is that you must always, always be polite. In my experience, 99.9% of freelancers understand this seemingly basic principle (which is good), but there is always the odd one who can’t resist sliding in a scornful remark or a snide comment. For example, I had one person call my project a joke in their bid. How do they expect to get hired with that kind of attitude towards a client? Anyway, my point is that good manners cost nothing and in fact could pay you a lot of money, so keep that in mind throughout all of your communiques and you will get on fine.


One Good Freelancing Practice


One thing that is worth mentioning is that I have been more inclined to accept bids for projects from people who send more than one message. The common thing that I receive is ‘I can do this. Please check PM’. I realize that you are busy trying to get as many jobs as possible, but this is not attractive to the employer in any way. While looking down the list of offers I am looking for someone who stands out and that I can tell something about straight away–not for a worker drone who does the same thing as everyone else.


If someone is willing to put more effort in to get work from me, then they are probably more willing to do a little bit of extra work to make sure that the project meets my exacting standards (which is what I am after). Employers are just as busy as you are if not more so and don’t always have time to check PMs, so take the time to write an interesting bid or two.

Maintaining good relationships is extremely important in business as well as in personal life. People who work from home, especially freelancers, need to maintain healthy relationships with people who can be beneficial for them in the future.


The Internet has provided a lot of new platforms to people to interact on–but still, emails are of great benefit. Some freelancers (especially the new ones) think that maintaining relationships by email is an old method of staying connected to the clients. They think that using live chats and social networking websites is a much better way to stay in touch, but that is not true.


Even today, people who are more professional and who outsource their work to freelancers prefer to contact freelancers through email. Freelancers who maintain effective relationships on email have a greater chance of finding freelance work. In this post, I’ll discuss the importance of continuing to use email in your online relationships.


Email Allows for Better Communication


Maintaining an email relationship with a client helps the freelancers to better understand what a client requires and what his demands are.


Freelancers are generally hired for jobs like web design, copywriting, content writing, computer programming, proofreading etc. We all would agree that when working with a new client it takes us some time to understand the exact outcome that client requires. But, when you are working with a client that you have built a healthy relationship with and have worked on different projects with before, you know what quality and type of work that client wants from you.


Using email saves a great deal of time and the freelancer can use that saved time somewhere else. Moreover, the outcome of freelance work in this situation is also better.


Use Email to Keep Your Client Updated


Maintaining an email relationship allows a freelancer to regularly send useful updates about their freelance work to clients who they have had good relationships with in the past. Remember that sending a client regular updates does not mean that one should start sending so many mails that the client gets exhausted and considers the emails to be spam.


Email relationships help the freelancers to stay connected with the clients even after completing a project. Some freelancers think that maintaining an email relationship with a client after a project has already been completed and after you have been paid is nothing more than a waste of time. But, that is not true.


Just like in a wholesale, drop shipping or any other business–freelancing is also something that requires you to nurture your clients. Maintaining an email relationship with the clients after your freelance contract has come to an end is a form of lead nurturing and lead generation for the freelancer. The relationship keeps the clients regularly updated and educated about the benefits they can get from the freelancer.


In the future, when the client needs help from a freelancer, he or she will contact that freelancer first because he or she knows them well. Apart from this, the client can also help bring in more contracts for the freelancer if he or she is satisfied with the freelancer’s work.


But, I Don’t Have Time


Email relationships are time consuming, but they are much more rewarding than other sources of communication. A freelancer might have a little trouble answering questions for a client on phone or on chat, but he or she can easily give an effective reply to the client through email.


Furthermore, email relationships can be considered a part of your networking efforts. A freelancer who has extraordinarily strong relationships with the clients who outsource their work online does not need to search for projects online very frequently. In fact, he or she gets projects, one after the other, from the clients with whom he or she has maintained excellent business and personal relationships with through emails.


What About the Social Networks?


Just because a freelancer maintains effective email relationships does not mean that the freelancer should only work on maintaining email relationships and should not interact with people through social networks.


The freelancer should continue to interact with people online through social networking and then shift that interaction towards emails and continue the relationship through emails. Communicating through emails better reflects the professionalism of a freelancer and uplifts the image of the freelancer in front of the client. This enhances the client’s confidence on the freelancer.


The Ethics of Dealing with Clients Through Email


There are certain ethical guidelines for effective email relationships. These guidelines should be followed by the freelancer in order to maintain good relationship with the clients. Some ethical guidelines include:



  • Do not send irrelevant emails

  • Do not send bulk emails to the clients

  • Do not be offensive

  • Do not use unclear statements


Email Relationships Are Not Just for Clients


A freelancer should not only maintain email relationships with the clients, but he or she should maintain business and personal relationships with other freelancers as well. These relationships help the freelancer to talk about different problems the freelancers are facing and what the possible solutions are for each problem.


Moreover, having email relationship with other freelancers could help them understand each other better, make their own teams and get projects assigned and completed working together as a team.


What About You?


Using email services and maintaining email relationships are two different things. So, freelancers, whether new or old, who are not into keeping email relationships with the clients and other freelancers should start practicing these relationships now because they could turn into something really beneficial for them.

What Happens When the Website You Are Working on Blows Up?


It’s every developer’s nightmare. You finally get approval from the client to go live and launch the client’s website and then BOOM! Something happens and the whole site blows up.


I recently had this scenario happen. Thankfully, the site wasn’t live yet, but the client still expected me to fix the site, with no offer of extra payment, even though I wasn’t the one who blew up the site.


There’s no doubt about it. A site blow-up can be difficult to handle.


I ended up spending an entire unpaid day and a half trying to figure the issue out. I reinstalled the site and database several times, played with the settings and finally gave up and put it on my own server to test it out. Turns out, it was a server issue brought on by messing with the htaccess file in WordPress.


Fixing blown up sites is obviously not the best way to spend our work time, so I made sure to turn it into a learning experience for next time. So, what do you do if a site blows up on you?


Who Dun It?


First, you need to figure out who blew up the site in the first place. This isn’t to assign blame, but instead helps you figure out where to start looking for the solution. It’s important to figure out what the last thing was that was added, changed or deleted in order to fix the site.


If It Was Your Doing


If you were the one who happened to have blown the site up, you owe the client a huge apology and an assurance that you won’t stop working until the site is back up.


Messing up big time like this can be difficult to deal with. After all, we work hard to try to appear perfect in the eyes of our clients and any mistake can feel like a huge embarrassment. Fortunately for us, clients realize that we’re human beings as well and most remain thankful that you’ve admitted to the mistake and are working to correct it. Who knows, you might end up gaining some extra points over the way you handle this situation!


Unfortunately though, this means you’ll be working for free. Don’t even think about trying to charge the client for this or you’ll find yourself quickly without any.


Also, don’t try to avoid fixing the site or pawning off the blame onto the client. They know if they broke something or not. Remember, good customer service is really one of the main things that set you apart from other developers.


If the Client Held the Dynamite


If it was the client who blew the site up, take a deep breath. Don’t get angry and don’t yell. Remember when I said developers are human beings? Well, so are clients.


If a client comes to you with a broken site, be calm and reassure them that you’ll get it back up ASAP. Be sure you get the exact details of what happened, what they did, what buttons they pushed etc, etc. This will go a long way to finding a speedy solution.


If the client doesn’t come to you or you were the one who discovered the blown up site, be careful not to place blame. People hate being pushed into a corner and will immediately become defensive and unhelpful.


Instead, inform the client that something critically wrong has happened to the site and ask them if they could tell you the last things that were done to the site so you can fix the problem.


This simple phrasing of words gently lets the client know they did something wrong, without embarrassing them. It reassures them that you’re there to fix the problem, not to make them feel bad.


To Charge or Not to Charge


Now here’s the really tricky part–do you or do you not charge the client to fix their website if they were the ones who blew it up?


This is totally up to you and your comfort level, but I suggest just biting the bullet and fixing the issue for free, especially if it’s something fairly small and quick.


Not only will you be a hero in the client’s eyes, but you’re more likely to get more referrals and repeat business from them as well.


A more difficult dilemma occurs when the problem is a large one. When the whole site needs to be redone, reinstalled, the database has a hidden bug or something that takes longer than an hour or two to fix, you might want to think about charging for it.


If the problem has occurred well after launch, it’s ok to charge for it. Just make sure to charge a fair rate and if possible, give them a discount and let them know you’re doing so.


If the site breaks before or right after launch, it’s best to suck it up and just fix it for free. Clients are finicky and you don’t want to risk angering them to where they don’t send you final payment for the original project. Plus, it doesn’t reflect well on you if the client has a broken site before it’s even launched.


Client Education


In order to ensure this never happens again, it’s worth your while to spend some time educating a client on how the site works. It may also benefit you in the long run to redo a part of the admin area to make it less confusing for the client.

  • Remove the extra fields you don’t want the client to edit

A key component of getting clients for your freelancing business is to get your name out there. You can be the very best freelancer in your chosen profession, but if no one has ever heard of you or your freelancing business, you won’t get very many clients.


It can be difficult to build a professional reputation for a new freelancing business. In this post, I’ll provide ten techniques that you can use to help establish yourself in your chosen field. I’ll also discuss some other methods you can use for finding work.


Why You Should Get Your Name Out There


Let’s face it, freelancing is competitive. There are likely hundred, if not thousands, of freelancers who offer services in your chosen field. You need some way to distinguish yourself from all of those other freelancers who are you are competing with.


Getting your name out there makes your freelancing business a known brand. This gives you a competitive advantage. All other things being equal, when choosing between a freelance who they’ve heard of and another freelancer who offers similar services, but is not known to them, most clients will choose the familiar freelancer.


10 Techniques to Get Your Name Out There


Fortunately, today’s Internet tools make it easy for freelancers to build an online brand for their freelancing business. Here are ten techniques that you can start to use today to get your name out there and bolster your freelancing reputation:



  1. Create a Blog. I’ve sung the praises of blogs for freelancers before, and I’ll do it again. Sure, you can run a freelance business without a blog, but blogs are relatively inexpensive so why would you want to? Build a blog, update it regularly, and drive some traffic to it.

  2. Guest Post. Whether or not you create your own blog, you can benefit from the blogs of others by submitting guest posts to popular blogs that are related to your freelancing field. Be sure to send your best content, since what you write will wind up representing your business.

  3. Give a Presentation. If you get the chance to speak before a business group about your profession, take it. Giving a good presentation is a great way to establish your expertise in your field. Be sure to include handouts with your contact information.

  4. Participate in Social Media. Having a social media circle is the hot new way for business people to network. The good news is that everyone can take part in social media. It costs nothing to set up a profile on most social media sites. Just remember to keep your participation professional.

  5. Be Interviewed. If you get a chance to take part in an interview for a blog or with a journalist, accept it. It is usually to your advantage to share your knowledge publicly and the interviewer may have larger audience that you would normally reach. If some of your contacts conduct regular interviews, you may be able to volunteer to be interviewed.

  6. Do a Webinar or Create a Podcast. Webinars and podcasts are two great techniques provide two more great opportunities for you to showcase your expertise. Just as in any other type of presentation, be professional and include your contact information.

  7. Join a Group. Luckily, the world is full of professional groups that you can join (both online and offline). Joining and becoming active in a group of like-minded professionals will not only help you to network, it may also allow you to access educational and job bank opportunities that wouldn’t otherwise be available to you.

  8. Take a Class. A classroom setting can often provide networking opportunities. This is especially true for offline classes where you meet face-to-face in a classroom setting. Plus, you can enhance your skills while getting to know others. Check your local colleges for evening classes.

  9. Write a Book. The Internet has made it easier than ever for professionals to get published. It’s relatively simple to create an eBook that highlights your experience and expertise. And once you have created an eBook, it can continue to generate leads for your business for months (maybe even years) to come.

  10. Leave Some Comments. A simple, but often overlooked means of getting your name out there, is to leave well thought out comments on popular blogs in your area. While this technique is similar to guest posting, you typically won’t have the hurdle of getting your comment accepted by the site owner. As long as you are respectful and professional, most blogs will publish your comment.


Other Ways to Find Freelancing Work


Sadly, if you don’t have a strong online brand yet, you may need to rely on others to do your marketing for you. There are basically three types of freelancing gigs that allow you to do this:



  • Projects with agencies

  • Subcontracts under other freelancers

  • Projects listed on bidding sites


In almost all of these cases, since you are going through an intermediary and not directly to the client, your income from a project will be lower than it would normally be. Whether you go through an agency, another freelancer, or use a bidding site–remember that the other entity will need to get a portion of what is earned. That portion pays for the intermediary’s marketing costs.


Of course, if you get your name out there you won’t need to go through someone else to find work.

1. Responding Late to Communications


How long does it take you to respond to inquiries about your services? And when you’re already working with a client, how long does your client wait to receive answers to their emails.


One successful copywriter has told me she has gotten jobs, just because she was the first to respond to a query. This goes to show, being prompt–no, fast–in your communications can make a difference.


Timely response includes letting your client know you’ve received the additional information or instructions they sent, and keeping them posted every time you complete a milestone in their project.


2. Not Following Up on Proposals


We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, the money is in the follow up! Do you send proposals and then never get in touch with the prospect again?


Some freelancers hesitate to follow up, for fear of acting like a pest. However, people are busy, people forget. Your next project could be a follow-up call away.


3. Missing Deadlines


This is the top peeve of clients! When you set deadlines, make sure you can meet them. Give yourself leeway for unexpected delays or interruptions. It’s always best to deliver your outputs ahead of the deadline. Remember, under-promise and over-deliver.


4. Shabby Communications


Even if you communicate promptly, but if your emails and proposals are filled with grammatical errors, misspellings or erroneous calculations, your prospect will still run the other way. Double-check, and if possible, triple-check, everything before firing it off to prospects and clients.


5. Sloppy, Shoddy Work


Clients can tell when you don’t give your work your 100%–or more. Making careless mistakes and cutting corners are bad habits that are sure to make clients cross you off their list of contractors.


If your work is less than stellar because you lack the skills to perform it properly, then do everything you can to get up to par. Get extra training, apprentice with an expert, and practice, practice, practice until you get good.


6. Avoiding Problems


It’s inevitable for projects to sometimes run into delays, challenges and other unexpected problems. Do you give your clients a heads-up on these, or do you bury your head in the sand and hope the problem goes away?


It’s better to communicate potential and existing problems to your clients right away. And when you do, have some solutions in mind already. Don’t ask, “What do we do now?” Instead ask, “This is the situation and here are your options. Which one would you like to go with?”


7. Unprofessional Behavior in Social Networks


A VA friend of mine recently purged her Facebook friends to draw a clear boundary between her “real” friends and professional acquaintances. Why? She had posted something on her wall that ticked off a client.


Think twice, no, 10 times before connecting with clients on a personal basis in social networks. And if you use social networks at all to attract prospects and clients, then remember to always behave in a professional manner.


Also, avoid complaining about your clients in public (tweeting counts as “public”), or sharing details of their projects. Even if you don’t name names, your client will know when you’re referring to them or their project, and they will get annoyed.


8. Losing Files


Do you often ask your clients to resend files they’ve provided? Or, if your client loses their copy of your work, are you able to give them another copy… even one year later?


Misplacing documents and other signs of disorganization are a big turnoff. Get organized, back up your work files, and make sure you can retrieve anything quickly.


9. Forgetting Agreements


This is where it helps to get everything in writing. That way, you’ll have a record of agreements, decisions, or changes you and your clients have made.


An occasional lapse may be forgivable, but to be habitually forgetful is another good way to lose clients.


10. Not Going the Extra Mile


Clients want to know you really care about them and their business. I’m not saying be a slave, or work for peanuts.


However, it does pay to go the extra mile now and again. Do something unexpected. It doesn’t have to take hours or cost you tons of money. Think of it as chocolate mints on the pillow of your hotel room. They cost a few cents and only take a few seconds to do. What chocolate mints can you give your clients?


How Remarkable Are You?


Nobody is perfect, of course, and all of us are probably guilty of some of these things at one time or another. I’ve certainly made some mistakes in my short freelancing career.


The important thing is to learn from your mistakes, improve your work, and move on. When you don’t recognize your mistakes, that’s when they become bad habits–and very difficult to change.


The opposite of these habits is to be a reliable, professional, remarkable freelancer.

5 New Social Networking Trends for Freelancers to Explore


Social media is here to stay. Twitter, Facebook, and Foursquare are a vital part of many freelancer’s marketing efforts.


But, just because these social media tools are popular today, doesn’t mean that they will always be effective marketing tools for freelancers. What’s popular today may be forgotten tomorrow. The shrewd freelancer will be constantly exploring new social media marketing alternatives.


Here are five promising new social media tools for freelancers to explore (and why I think each is worth looking at):


1. Amplify


Amplify is a social media tool that allows you to bookmark and share all or parts of what you find on the web. It also links to many other popular social media tools such as Twitter and Facebook.


The basic idea is to help you find and share better content more quickly. Let’s face it, most of us operate in an information overload state and anything that can help combat that is a welcome addition.


From my perspective, the distinguishing factor is that Amplify allows you to share information in context without being limited in the number of characters through its clip and share feature. Also notable is that within days of joining, without any real promotional effort on my part, I had several dozen users selecting me as a source (similar to a follower on other social media sites), which means that many of my contacts are already here.


2. One True Fan


One True Fan intrigues me and scares me at the same time. I definitely see potential for freelancers, but at the same time it scares me in the same way that Foursquare scared me. (As in, do I really want to share where I am at all times? Except in this case, the “where I am” is virtual and not physical.)


This tool allows you to check in to various websites and blogs that you visit. The person who checks in the most becomes “the one true fan” of the site. Like geolocation sites, there are gaming elements. Naturally, online stores and perhaps even bloggers may wish to offer discounts and incentives to the person with the most check-ins.


This application can give freelancers who own websites insight into potential customers who may not contact them through comments or email. Also, freelancers can connect with others who show in interest in a site since the interface allows you to see who else has visited a site. According to Andy Beard, One True Fan is from the folks who brought us MyBlogLog (remember them?), which was big for a while.


3. Quora


Quora seems to be a site that many freelancers are exploring right now. It’s a question answering site with a social element (see Fluther below). It’s goal is to become the best online resource. Like other question answering sites, you can link Quora to other social media including Twitter, Facebook, and more.


In fact, answering questions can be a good strategy to demonstrate expertise. Asking questions can also be a good way to get information and Quora seems to be drawing a large number of small businesses and professionals. It will be interesting to see where Quora goes in the coming months.


4. Fluther


Fluther is another question answering site with a social element. Of course, many other social media platforms have a question feature (LinkedIn comes to mind), but this company is now linked to the social media mover and shaker, Twitter through its development team (from Mashable)–which makes Fluther one social medium for freelancers to watch.


To me, Fluther did not seem as well-organized as Quora (see above). It did seem more intuitive and I found it a little easier to use. However, it does not seem to be drawing a professional community (at least not from a casual inspection of it).


5. Mobile Interfaces


While this isn’t technically a single social media tool, mobile computing is only going to grow. Mobile interfaces already exist for most of the major social media platforms. I would expect to find most of your favorite social media utilities available as mobile apps in the coming months as well as new mobile-only social platforms.


Mobile social media tools are good news for freelancers, because it allows them location independence and even greater flexibility for keeping up with clients and prospects. In fact, if you haven’t gone mobile yet, why haven’t you?

Freelance Marketing Inspiration from Famous Quotes



My computer’s monitor shuffles between motivating quotes every 15 minutes. A while ago, I found this to be quite powerful for inspiring me and getting me started on my work. However, having same old, same old quotes display on my monitor stops working after a couple of weeks, or months.


Every now and then I look around the web for new quotes to add to my personal kick in the “back” desktop wallpaper. Recently, during such a searching session I came upon two interesting, yet opposing quotes.


Both of the quotes that inspired me are from renowned men:



In this post, I’ll examine the validity of these quotes and discuss how they relate to freelance marketing.

Do You Need to Market a Great Product?


According to a quote from Edwin Land, “marketing is what you do when your product is no good.”


For example, the success of Apple’s products seems to prove this point. Apple products seem to practically sell themselves. I also personally think this statement is perfectly true.


When your product or service is very good, you don’t really have to market it a lot because people will gladly talk about it to their friends, partners etc. For example, a lot of PC users say that we, Macintosh users, are more fans than customers of Apple. And we do talk about how cool our Macs are…


Is Marketing a Vital Part of a Freelance Business?


According to a quote from Milan Kundera, “Business has only two functions–marketing and innovation.”


I personally agree with this quote too. Why? Because I am a perfectionist and number one thing I want to do throughout my life is to innovate and discover new ways of doing my job done and helping my clients in the best way possible!


But, the above quote states that there’s another side to any business, besides creating innovative products and services. That side is marketing. This leads us to a paradox–you do marketing when your product is no good, but you should also market your innovative products and services.


Why would you do that? Why would you try to market something that’s innovative unless it is no good? And then it wouldn’t be innovative, would it?


So what do you think? Who’s right? Were they both possibly wrong? Any other ideas?


Let me point out one other idea.


Let the Crowd be the Judge


Isaac Newton said the following: “If I had seen further than others, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” Impressive, right? But, how does that apply to our discussion?


To me this means that it’s best to be part of the innovation process. This way you’re on top of the wave. Don’t wait for technology to catch up to you because you’ll end up on the back side of the wave.


But, how do we stay on top of the wave? We do that by being in the crowd, because the crowd creates the ecosystem from which innovation emerges. The crowd provides the giants Newton was talking about. We need to stay focused, sharp and see what ideas pass before us, join and help others. This way we get a grasp of what people around us are capable of, or we may find a way to get to people who are capable of great things. Moreover, we can meet people that can help us improve and innovate. We can find our giants!


Innovation is hard work, requires hundreds or thousands of hours of work and we need something to drive us through our research and practice. We need to be open and share what we think and what we have even if it is our darkest secret. By means of internet and social media, hundreds, thousands, millions may help us improve. And once we have something that’s just a bit . . . great, the information about our product or service will go viral without us doing anything. People will talk about us and our services or products. They will do our marketing for free, just like Apple fans do.


The crowd will fuel our desire to innovate and do the marketing for us, so do we need marketing when we innovate by using the worldwide crowd around us? Were Edwin Land and Milan Kundera wrong and Newton right?

A common freelancing stereotype is that a freelancer never knows where or when his or her next job is coming from–or from whom. For most of us, though, this stereotype is only partially true.


Odds are that your next client is hidden somewhere among your Twitter (or other social media) followers, your previous clients, or your friends and acquaintances.


Time after time, whenever we’ve asked freelancers where they find clients and they give us the same two answers: through referrals and repeat business. Those answers don’t surprise me at all because that is where most of my own clients come from.

6 Quick Tips to Get More Work from Your Contacts


Most of these tips are simple and easy to implement. Some of them are so simple that after you read this you’ll probably be kicking yourself and saying “why didn’t I think of that already?”


Don’t worry, in the past I’ve missed some of these tips too.



  1. Make sure your social media bio profile includes your profession. Whenever I see a social media comment from someone whose name I don’t recognize I always click through to view their profile. It amazes me how many profiles tell me very little about the commenter. For example, a bio that says “loves comics, chocolate, and candy” tells me nothing. In contrast, a bio that says “a web designer who loves comics, chocolate, and candy” retains the fun element while letting me know that the commenter is a web designer.

  2. Make sure that all of your social media profiles include a way to learn more about you (usually a link to your business website). It’s no good if they know that you are a writer, developer, designer, etc.–but have no way to follow up and find your portfolio or website. Even an abandoned social media profile could possibly yield a client.

  3. When you tweet or update your status, occasionally include a description of what you are working on. Not everyone will click through to view your profile. That’s why it’s important to describe what you actually do to your social media friends once in a while. Tweeting or writing in your status about the coffee you need to get started each will probably get you some sympathetic chuckles. Tweeting something about how good you feel after just finishing a web design reminds your social media contacts what it is that you do for a living.

  4. Pay attention to what others are saying in social media. I really mean it. I recently got a writing gig because I noticed that someone who I was following tweeted that they needed a writer. While one might argue that was an isolated case of being in the right place at the right time, I’ve seen statuses and tweets listing project work more than once. People really do talk about their project needs on social media (if you’re following the right people).

  5. Keep an updated list of past and current clients. Make the extra effort to stay in touch with them without overwhelming them with communications. Most clients don’t mind if you check in occasionally to see how things are going.

  6. Have a limited time sale. If things are going slow for you, why not do what the big names do? Offer a special deal. Tweeting or posting your discount in your status could be just what it takes to motivate someone to hire you now. Everyone loves a good bargain, and that includes your potential clients.


While these tips are easy, they should be used carefully. Don’t overdo it!


Why You Shouldn’t Overdo


So, the tips in the previous section are so easy that you’re going to make sure that you do all of them several times a day. Your workload should immediately go up, right?


Wrong!


The tips are simple, but if you overdo it on tips three through five–you may be taken for a spammer or perhaps others will simply look upon you as being boring. The key is to combine personality and professionalism, and that can be a delicate balance.


Tweeting about your work, for example, should probably only be done about once a day.


Relationships Still Count


At the core of every project is a client relationship. At the core of every relationship is trust.


None of these tips will work very well if your relationships with your current clients and your social media followers are damaged or weak. This is yet another reason why online reputation management is still important.
