Matt Creamer on Influence

Jio
Insightful piece by Matt Creamer in Adage today which correctly challenges the Klout-kerfuffle about Influence in social media.

Matt's on the money when he suggests...

Influence is not the same as popularity

Influence is not the same as fame

Influence is not the same as the nature or form of our connectedness to each other (and by the way most human social networks are not of the hub-and-spoke variety that the Influentials Hypothesis proposes).

....though each of this can help us understand aspects of influence.

So what is it?

Influence is what makes the difference between an idea or behaviour being adopted (or not) amongst those around us and those around them (and so on).

Influence is often much easier to see after the fact and harder to predict ahead of time than we imagine - as Duncan and others have repeatedly pointed out - so we shouldn't imagine that because something does or doesn't seem to be a driver of others' behaviour that it would do so if we re-played the tapes).

But it's probably best understood as something the Influenced do in response to those around them (as opposed to something the Influential do to them). We call it Social Learning or plain old Copying

Influence is not fixed for most modern human life but fluid - not least because most human life now consists not of repeated interactions with the same few poorly connected individuals (beyond our little closed tribe) but rather of this plus fleeting indirect connections to millions of others and their groups and their connections. Not to mention the fact that most choices over which we permit other folk to have an influence are between equally good, fundamentally indistinguishable options (certainly compared to the few life-or-death decisions subsistence tribes face).

So next time the clowns at Klout start wittering on about influence, stop before you let them shape your opinions...

Buzz Crew (sans Tong),

After listening to yesterdays episode, I was trying to think of a historical situation similar to the NBC-Comcast merger, as Cooley said it was unprecedented. I just finished reading Tim Wu’s book Master Switch, so an example came readily to mind, the movie industry from the 30s onward. All the major studios controlled all aspects of film, from writing, to production and owned the only theaters that could show the films. This seems to me to be remarkably similar in its implications. What can we look forward to as a result? If nothing else, the ability for groups outside government oversight to exert censorship over media, a la the Motion Picture Production Code. Luckily the FCC is putting in regulation to ensure that other networks will have access to NBC-Universal content at reasonable prices. That’s a relief, although I can think of no examples of giant multi-billion dollar conglomerates using their money to influence policy, this is going to be awesome for consumers!!!!!

Barring some miracle on Thursday, the Buzz Out Loud Brian (BOLB) Appearance Streak will end at 50 shows. A Brian has appeared in an official BOL episode since 10/29/10.

Here a list detailing the streak…

I was hoping that this streak would surpass the Ripken IronMan Streak, but sadly this will not be the case unless there is another Brian in CNET that can talk about tech for a couple mins on episode 1390

but congrats to Tong and Cooley for a job well done

PS… as I was about to finish typing this e-mail there’s probably a BOLM (Molly) streak or BOLT (Tom) streak that is a lot longer that the BOLB of 50… so maybe this streak is not so special and I’m probably the only person who tracked this

Hi all,

A merger like this may be unheard of in the US, but in Canada Bell is one of the biggest telecommunication firms in the country with coast to coast internet, tv, cellular, and land line telephone. They also run most of the biggest TV networks in Canada including CTV, TSN (the sports network), Comedy Central, /A\ Channel, Much Music, Discovery (Canada), Bravo!, and many more. See the bottom of http://www.Ctv.ca for the full list. They also own Chum radio

(http://www.ctvglobemedia.com/en/chumRadio.aspx) which owns stations all across the country, and the Globe and Mail, one of Canada’s biggest daily newspapers.

Rogers has started getting into this as well with their purchase of the Sportsnet channels, and part ownership in both the Toronto Bluejays and Toronto Raptors sports teams, as well as RogersonDemand online streaming, and their premium channels on their digital cable service.

I can’t say wether this will be good, bad, or otherwise for us in the future but so far the content providers owning the content creators doesn’t seem to be making things any worse here, but it’s been this way for a long time. Hopefully the same holds true for the Comcast/NBC merger, but with the way it sounds, the only thing worse would be if AT&T bought NBC instead..

Good luck.

Ben in Nova Scotia, Canada.

It’s a bit unfair to compare iOS adoption to Gingerbread adoption. The day Gingerbread hits, it hits for carriers who then have to spend time to get it to work on their devices. All of this process takes place behind the scenes for Apple, so we hear about an update when developers get it and then it hits a few weeks later. Android just doesn’t work under that model. Gingerbread was literally released less than a month ago and the latest iOS was released in November. Why do they count a version of Android that is under development by manufacturers but not the development version of iOS? They’re counting Android adoption when a piece of its development cycle – getting it onto the actual device – has only just begun.

Froyo does already have over a 50% adoption rate. http://gizmodo.com/5737440/froyo-is-finally-being-used-by-over-50-of-android-users?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+gizmodo/full+(Gizmodo)

Fragmentation is an issue for Android, sure, but the life cycle for a phone is pretty short compared to say, a computer. If your Android phone is outdated in its software, then within 6 months it’s also outdated in hardware.

In this topsy-turvy world, Google's Dr. Eric Schmidt is forced out as CEO. HP joins the fray by rearranging its board of directors with four new members, including former California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman. Verizon files suit against the FCC for rules they proposed, and no, the iPad 2 won't be getting the Retina Display--much to our dismay.

Hello All you Wonderful People!

Just a note about the girl who fell in the fountain: I used to work at this mall (Berkshire Mall, Reading PA) and this same mall had a huge protest concerning a mother nursing her child on a public bench. A mother notified security about the public display of nourishment and security asked the nursing mother to kindly cover up at the request of the offended mother. The nursing mom threw a fit because she had her rights. The next day there was a large protest outside and the security officers (some friends of mine) we’re suspended and later fired. I was told that security was no longer allowed to approach any customer unless they were doing something obviously illegal. Perhaps that is why no one came to the girl’s help.

Hey Buzz Crew,

In episode 1390, you guys talked about Apple’s Pentalobe screws going into the iPhone 5. This wouldn’t be Apple’s first device to have them, because apparently, the new MacBook Air has them too. However, there is a fix! There is a kit that will allow to open the computer and access the battery.
