Miramar (Thunderbird 3.3) Alpha 2 now available for testing

Miramar Alpha 2, available here for download, is for testers, extension developers, and friends who are curious to follow the development of our next release of Thunderbird.

Miramar Alpha 2 is built on top of Gecko 2.0 and includes a new Troubleshooting information page, improvements to add-on notifications and attachment handling, and numerous other bug fixes. We expect to release further interim releases as we work towards the next major version of Thunderbird.

Please read the release notes for more details.

the web is not built on patents

No one owns the Web. It's not built on patents. People building Web sites and applications, people using Web sites and applications, and people building Web browsers and other Web clients all benefit from this very important freedom whether or not everyone realizes it.

Mozilla, and our friends over at Opera, have insisted on this important fundamental principle of the Web as we've built out support for HTML5 <video> in our browsers. Today, with notice that they intend to stop shipping the patent encumbered h.264 video codec in Chrome, Google has joined Mozilla and Opera and lent its significant weight to this critical aspect of the Web.

With approximately 40% of Web usage happening through these three browsers, VP8+Vorbis in WebM will soon have the critical mass it needs to become the standard video technology for HTML5's <video> tag.

update: Mozilla's Mike Shaver has a great post on this development.

              Album Art Lover: Look-Alikes

One of my best albums I’ve heard so far is Cape Dory, a nautical-obsessed indie pop album by Colorado husband-and-wife duo Tennis. The unique album cover is a near-exact replica of a vintage album cover by Lisa Hartman (the band apparently collects ’70s-’80s female pop artist vinyl just for the cover art). This got me thinking of other album cover doppelgangers I’ve encountered recently. Here’s a collection of covers that have striking similarities to each other (intentional or not). Also, if you’d like to seem some more of these, I recommend checking out the Album Cover Look-Alikes Mix I did a couple years back.

              MP3 Tennis – Marathon

Y2B Lisa Hartman – Hold On, I’m Coming

MP3 Belle & Sebastian – Another Sunny Day

MP3 Pains of Being Pure at Heart – Stay Alive

Y2B David Bowie – Boys Keep Swinging

MP3 LCD Soundsystem – Dance Yrself Clean

              MP3 Sufjan Stevens – Chicago

Y2B Slick Rick – Teenage Love

MP3 Thom Yorke – The Eraser

MP3 Iron & Wine – Walking Far From Home

MP3 Department of Eagles – No One Does It Like You

              MP3 Dan Deacon – Snookered

Winter (Or What We Mistake for December)

Photo taken by the amazing garmonique

I’ll be honest with you, this collection of songs was compiled with nothing but mixed emotions and by that I mean I wasn’t able to put my finger on any real understanding of what Winter should feel like. Happy or sad? The undertones of what is otherwise pleasing to look at in nature often strikes differently in the depths of the mind where everything tends to get lost. Although I guess that’s just it for me, using music as an instrument to bridge these contradictions and find a sense of acceptance–which is the only point I find myself able to move forward (into the new year, of course). Maybe unlike the rest, Winter is the only time we’re given the option to choose… and well, I chose for it to be beautiful. Oh, but now you’ve read too far into it. Here’s to stouthearted growth.

MP3 Young the Giant – Islands

MP3 James Vincent McMorrow – If I Had a Boat

MP3 Wye Oak – I Hope You Die

MP3 Agnes Obel – Brother Sparrow
